The short cut

So, Franz looks at a map when we are stopped at a rest stop and decides we will take a short cut from the 101 to the 5 - on route 52. See those pictures? Yes, there were some interesting parts, the tarantulas crossing the highway, the odd deer, the windy roads, then straight ones. The lack of humanity, untill we saw the guy on the tractor in Buttonwillow. Did you know Buttonwilow is the cotton capital of the west? By the time we got to Buttonwillow we could not figure out where the 5 was, everything was flat, covered with power lines, finally hope, we see some semi's in the distance. Yes, this could be it, we enter what we think is the freeway only to find we are running parallel to the 5, but are separated by a fence. AHHHH! I am losing it by now. We have driven for hours in the middle of nowhere no services nothing. Finally we get to a gas station, where MaCall accidentally shuts the car door on my fingers. I scream bloody murder (sorry Annette), go into the shop to get ice in a cup and freeze my hand for the remainder of the trip. Our 6 hour drive took 11 hours.

This was the cap to what was an otherwise enjoyable trip to Gilroy for the four day weekend. The highlight was a visit to the Tech Museum in San Jose for the Leonardo Davinci exhibit. What a brilliant mind! You can't imagine how many parts in our car engines were invented by him in the 1500's!

Now, to recover. Tomorrow I go to Loma Linda Hospital to see a specialist for my Parvo. I am begging for help.

Oh, geeze. Tarantulas crossing the road? That's horrifying.

Nice job, Franz. Way to get lost. :)

Wow. That sounds awful! Sorry, but I can't help laughing a little..
One time my mom and I were driving from Gainesville to the Orlando airport and she has a bad back, so she wanted me to drive for the last half hour. We tried to get off at an exit and to pull over, but we ended up on some other highway with no exits for 20+ miles and when we could finally turn around, we couldn't get back on the original highway from the direction we were headed. Every road we were on was a toll road and we had a flight to catch to boot. Ugh. What a nightmare! Yours sounds much worse, though. Ours was like a 1 1/2 - 2 hour detour. I can't imagine a 6 hour one! Cool pics, though. :)

The shortcut from hell; I think you may have inherited this trait (to study a map and actually believe it), from me. Very few of my shortcuts in life have actually ever worked (in more ways than one).

I wish I could've know to warn you!!!!! We did that ONCE. I thought I would never see civilization again! The ultimate trip from HELL. Poor you. What misery after such a great visit- I enjoyed all of you sooo much!
Hope your appointment goes well today and that the doctor will have some positive answers for you!

OK so I'm going to post this before reading the other comments....sounds like you inherited your map-reading abilities from Dad, Franz. (No offense intended, Dad). Mike and I took a "shortcut" from highway 1 to Santa Rosa, a few years ago when we went to see Grandpa while in Northern California...the drive was very similar in its emptiness, creepiness, and endlessness. We didn't see a person or house for over 3 hours.

Sounds like an interesting trip. I wouldn't like the eight-legged wildlife! I'll excuse the remark since it's made on the other side of the pond :)
