Romance of The Forest

The verdict is out, last night's Northanger Abbey was great! It stayed true to the novel and even received Franz's thumbs up. FYI Most of the story was a parody of Ann Radcliffe's novel Romance of the Forest - a much shorter read than Mysteries of Udolpho of you are ready to give it a try. If you are ready to tempt yourself, see if you can withstand the evils that lurk inside those insipid books - just check out the titles at Zittaw Press. They are precisely what Austen's heroins were reading. Did you notice the scene in the circulating library? Here is a pic of what remains of the library in bath (taken on our 2005 trip). Circulating libraries were subscription libraries - you paid a fee to check out the books - they were not affordable for everyone.

To learn more about circulating libraries go to The History of the Gothic Publishing, 1800 - 1835, by Franz Potter.

I'm so bummed that I missed this one. Mason still sleeps in our room (where the tv is) and was having issues. Sigh. Did anyone record it?

I missed the recording too. I kept thinking all day I need to set the DVR--spaced out. I have started watching persuasion. so far I am intrigued. I will probably finish tomorrow. Baby steps for me.

I watched it too, and I loved it! It was much better than Persuasion. I'll have to go read the book now.
