Sam Maloof Foundation - another great outing!

Today I went with friend and artist Helga Batman, to the Maloof Foundation. It is located about half way between Michele and Doug's and us - hint good place to meet...

Sam Maloof is a very famous wood craftsman and furniture maker. You will find his furniture on display at the Smithsonian in D.C. as well as in many other great museums. He is now one year younger than my father would be if he were alive. Sam is very much alive - was enjoying the afternoon on his patio. His property is now a foundation open to the public - there is a tour of his work shops, grounds and museum - which was his old home. He now lives in a newer home on the same property. It is beautiful. The gardens are designed with water conservation in mind and are really interesting. There are so many birds and blooms. I was eating lunch when I heard a HUGE buzzing! Franz would have freaked! A swarm of European bees flew over - and fortunately kept going. Apparently they have several hives on site as well. If you would like to see my paintings from the day, go to my daily painting blog.

This is one of Sam's rockers. I understand you can pick one up for around $40,000. 00

I love old furniture like that rocker. Sounds like a fun day. Yes Franz would have yelled and howled at the sight of the bees. I will NEVER forget that day as long as I live--the bee in Franz's ear. I've never heard such a long string of foul language from anyone until that day 16 years ago.
Good times.
