Perspective

We were listening to NPR today as we drove down the hill to Redlands for MaCall's violin lesson. All Things Considered was on - reporting from China. Sorry, I am not good with the names of the places. This reporter had us right there with her as events were unfolding. By the time we got to Redlands - early for our appointment so stopped for Frozen Yogurt - we were in tears. It really put into perspective the "trials" we have been facing. How trivial money is, or even my lame ailments - annoying but not life threatening. Here this young couple is dealing with the fact that their two year old son and parents are at the bottom of a heap of rubble and we are in the sun eating frozen yogurt and trying to make sure our children receive the correct cultural lessons. It really angers me that the only perspective we get on the local news is not about what is happening to these people in China but rather - this could be us at any time now! Yes, we all know the big one is coming, but can't we take a moment to mourn for our fellow brothers and sisters in China? Here is a short cap on the story, but you can go to this link and listen to the broadcast. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90447603

All Things Considered, May 14, 2008 · More than 600,000 people lived in the city of Dujiangyan before the earthquake. Now there is no telling how many are dead. Much of the city lies in ruins. Hospitals, schools, apartment buildings were flattened by the force of the earthquake.
On Monday, Fu Guanyu dropped off her young son, Wang Zhilu, at his grandparents' house so she could go to work. Minutes later, the earthquake hit.
She rushed back home and saw their apartment building in ruins. She says soldiers came right away to help, but they had no equipment.
Two days later, the heavy machinery is on the way. As an excavator clears a path, Fu and her husband Wei Wang search the debris, calling for their son.
After a long while, the workers stop. They have found bodies.

Yeah, Julio heard the same report and he told me he cried too. I read it-very sad. Luckily, Callie and Brian are ok-they were still at Alice and Lynn's when the quake hit. No damage to their building. They are in Vietnam now.
