Eloise found one of these impressive guys on our porch today. The Ten Lined June Beetle eats the dead conifer needles. I'd say he was nearly two inches big. When she tried to move him with some tweezers he hissed at her - quite a loud hiss, not some wimpy hiss. Nature is amazing.

I just found one on my broom near my porch light today- in the middle of September! He is very torpid and hasn't moved more than an inch all day. He hissed loudly at me when I tried to pick him up to see the striopes on his belly, and held on tight to the broom.
